  • Permanent makeup has surprisingly been around for many years, but only in the past few years has it become majorly popular. More and more women are opting for permanent makeup services, the most popular of which is the eyebrows. Brows, after all, are the picture frame for our faces. Perfect arches are the key to opening up the eyes and the latest fashion style calls for thick full brows which most of us are lacking naturally. Filling in the brows daily can be tiresome not to mention causing anxiety in situations where the brows may be rubbed off, leaving us with half a brow missing.
There are many different names on the web for permanent makeup, making it ultra-confusing; Permanent makeup, cosmetic tattooing, micropigmentation, microblading, eyebrow embroidery etc, etc. Are these all different types of procedures? Do they mean the same thing? Relax, I will explain.
Permanent makeup is the process of implanting pigment into the dermal layer of the skin to create fuller looking brows, defined eyes or plumper lips. Is it really permanent? Yes and no. Typically permanent makeup artists us a pigment rather than an ink. Pigment has a thicker consistency than its watery counterpart. Due to its thinner viscosity ink has more of a staying power and is used primarily for body tattooing. Pigment will last in the skin for approximately 1-5 years. Everyone’s skin is different and the use of skincare products and exposure to the elements can impact how well the pigment will stay which is why there is such a broad range. The pigment exfoliates out of the skin over time causing the color to lighten. Most permanent makeup artists recommend a color refresh about every 2-3 years. Permanent cosmetics is typically done with an electric machine similar to that of a tattoo artist.
Microblading, eyebrow embroidery and 3D Feather hair stroke methods are all terms for ‘microblading”. This is a manual method of tattooing that still falls under the guidelines of tattoo artistry but is considered to be a semi-permanent procedure. The hand tool used resembles a small blade consisting of several needles needed to simulate hair strokes in the brow. The small blade makes a tiny cut in the dermis of the skin in the design of a single brow hair. The pigment is then placed over the skin so that the pigment absorbs into the skin. This method often results in a much lighter, softer version of permanent makeup. Finer hair strokes can often be achieved using this method. Due to the fact that the pigment in microblading is not absorbed as deeply into the dermal layer as the traditional machine method, it is classed as semi-permanent as it will fade and exfoliate much quicker resulting in a need to refresh the color annually. This is a great choice for people that are a little nervous about permanent makeup, and people who want a very natural but fuller look.
Both types of procedures are suitable for all types of clients and can be utterly transformational, especially for clients that have experienced hair loss or thinning due to chemotherapy or alopecia. Permanent makeup however is an art form, chose your artist wisely. Washington state requires that all Permanent cosmetic artists be licensed. Our artist here at HM Spa & Salon has been performing permanent makeup procedures for over 10 years both here in the States and in Europe. She is a licensed esthetician with a fine art degree from the University of Liverpool in England. She is an expert at color choice and shape design creating a perfect brow enhancement to compliment your face shape and style.

Afraid to go in the pool to cool off for fear of losing your brows? Microblading is for you! Microblading is perfect for anyone who wants to fully reconstruct, define, or fill-in over tweezed brows. Instead of tracing over the eyebrow with harsh ink creating a hard line, a semi-permanent pigment is pushed into the surface of the skin with a fine blade pen to draw individual strokes one by one to the existing hair, therefore creating the most natural looking, full eyebrow you can possibly imagine.
